Mechthild Reh (* 1950 ) is a German Africanist.

Life

She completed her first degree at the University of Stuttgart (German studies, history) with the state examination in 1975 and her legal clerkship at grammar schools in Esslingen and Heidenheim . She completed her second degree at the University of Cologne (African Studies, General Linguistics, Sociology) with a doctorate in Cologne in 1984 . From 1981 to 1984 she was a research assistant in the DFG- funded universal project UNITYP ( Hansjakob Seiler , Cologne). From 1984 to 1985 she was a research associate in the DFG-funded project 'Grammaticalization in African Languages' ( Bernd Heine , Cologne). From 1986 to 1989 she was a DAAD lecturer at the University of Khartoum . From 1989 to 1994 she was a research assistant in the CRC 214 'Identity in Africa' (A5: 'Linguistic and ethnic identity'; Franz Rottland et al .; Bayreuth). From 1994 to 1996 she was a substitute professor for African studies in Hamburg . After her habilitation in 1995 in Bayreuth , she has been teaching since 1996 as a university professor for African Studies at the Institute for African Studies and Ethiopian Studies, University of Hamburg .

Her main research interests are documentation and analysis of African languages ​​(especially East and Northeast Africa), Nilo-Saharan languages, sociology of language / sociolinguistics, language typology and language contact, cognitive linguistics and semantics.
