Mechtild von Wunnenberg

Mechtild von Wunnenberg († December 30, 1268 in Zurich ) was the abbess of the Fraumünnen monastery in Zurich from 1255 to 1268 and thus the mistress of the city.

Live and act

Mechtild von Wunnenberg comes from the Thurgau baron family von Wunnenberg, which is documented in the 13th and 14th centuries. In the maternal line she was related to Judenta von Hagenbuch . Since 1244 at the latest, she was a convent woman in Fraumünster. In the summer of 1255 she was elected abbess. On September 1, 1256, King Richard of Cornwall took over the special protection of the Fraumünster and the city of Zurich.

During her tenure, Mechtild von Wunnenberg was repeatedly forced to sell income and land in order to pay off heavy debts. She had the choir and the north tower completed at the cathedral and revised parts of the inheritance law for Zurich citizens' daughters. From 1268 at the latest, pupils were taught in the abbey.
