Peter Vogelsanger

Peter Vogelsanger (born February 28, 1912 in Lucerne ; † July 2, 1995 in Zurich ) was a Reformed Swiss theologian , historian and pastor.

Live and act

Peter Vogelsanger was the son of the gold and silversmith Friedrich Vogelsanger and Rosina, née. Moser. He studied Protestant theology and history from 1932 to 1936 , in Zurich with Emil Brunner , in Bonn with Karl Barth and in Basel. 1954 Doctorate in Zurich as Dr. theol. From 1936 he was pastor in Wollerau , from 1941 in Schaffhausen (Steigkirche) and from 1956 to 1978 at the Fraumünster in Zurich. From 1940 to 1972 he was a chaplain captain in the Swiss Army.

He founded the political-cultural magazine Reformatio and was its editor-in-chief from 1952 to 1963 on a part-time basis. From 1968 to 1978 he was a member of the Synod of the Evangelical Reformed Church of the Canton of Zurich , and from 1974 to 1976 President of the Assembly of Representatives of the Swiss Evangelical Church Federation . Vogelsanger was a pioneer in understanding between the Reformed and Roman Catholic Churches in Switzerland.

His main work as a historian is the monograph Zurich and his Fraumünster . Together with his wife Irmgard Vogelsanger-de Roche , with whom he had been married since 1939, and church caretaker Hans Künzi , he initiated the Chagall windows in the Fraumünster. In retirement he lived in Kappel am Albis near Zurich. His son is David Vogelsanger , a former Swiss ambassador and historian.
