The medal for the defense of Sevastopol ( Russian Медаль “За защиту Севастополя” ) was a Russian award. It was donated by Tsar Alexander II as a silver medal on November 26, 1856. The award was intended to honor the heroism of the defenders of Sevastopol in the Crimean War . The siege of Sevastopol took place from 1854 to 1855. The medal went to generals, officers and soldiers, but also to residents, serfs and servants who took part in the defense of Sevastopol. A total of 100,000 pieces were produced.

Order decoration

The silver medal decoration is a medal with a diameter of 28 millimeters. On the front it shows the monograms of Tsar Nicholas I and that of Tsar Alexander II. Both monograms are crowned with the imperial crown.

The reverse shows the eye of God and in the middle the two-line years September 13, 1854 and August 28, 1855 ( “СЪ 13 СЕНТЯБРЯ - 1854 - ПО 28 АВГУСТА - 1855” ). The years are enclosed by the inscription with the order's motto ЗА ЗАЩИТУ СЕВАСТОПОЛЯ (For the defense of Sevastopol).
