Medal for services in the coal industry of the German Democratic Republic

The medal for services in the coal industry of the German Democratic Republic was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was donated on April 29, 1972 in three stages, bronze , silver and gold . The award took place after a certain number of years of service. In detail this meant:

  • for 40 years of service in gold,
  • for 25 years of service in silver,
  • for 15 years of service in bronze.

It was awarded to all members of the coal industry for many years of service and outstanding achievements in this field. The medal could also be awarded for outstanding performance before the actual service period was reached.

Appearance and wearing style

The bronze, silver-plated or gold-plated medal with a diameter of 32 mm shows a depiction of an open pit excavator behind a briquette factory in the center of its obverse . Below are two crossed laurel branches. The reverse of the medal, on the other hand, shows the GDR's national coat of arms in the center, surrounded by the inscription: MEDAL FOR MERIT (above) IN THE GDR'S COAL INDUSTRY (below). The medal was worn on a 24 mm × 13 mm clasp which is alternately black, yellow, black and yellow. The interim clasp is of the same quality and additionally shows the attached 10 mm miniature of the obverse of the medal in the center.
