The Valais media library is spread across four locations within the canton . In addition to the headquarters in Sion, there are two regional branches in Brig-Glis and Saint-Maurice . The collection of audiovisual media related to the canton of Valais is located in Martigny . This division also takes into account the linguistic aspect of the bilingual canton. The media library has set itself four main tasks:

  1. Collecting, cataloging and storing works that have anything to do with Valais ( Vallesiana )
  2. Collecting, developing and storing media
  3. Information and animation for everyone
  4. Coordination and development of the Valais library network

The Valais media library publishes its annual report in the cantonal Walliser yearbook Vallesia and on its own website.

history

The library was founded in 1853 as the Cantonal Library of Valais . She kept this name until 2000. The two regional branches in Upper and Lower Valais have existed since 1971 in Brig and 1974 in Saint-Maurice. In 1987 the Valais film and photo archive was opened in Martigny. The media library cooperates with the Schloss Leuk Foundation in awarding the Spycher: Leuk Literature Prize .

Duration

The Valais media library offers users a wide range of literature both at its headquarters and in its branches. According to the order, the media library collects all works of all types that have anything to do with Valais. The music library leads u. a. the archives of the composers Pierre Mariétan and Jean-Luc Darbellay .

Usage and catalog

RERO-Wallis brings together those Valais libraries that participate in the library network of western Switzerland ( Réseau des bibliothèques de Suisse occidentale = RERO). Their common catalog is RERO-Wallis. Since January 2003 magazine articles which are also related to the Valais have been listed in the online catalog .
