Media & Time - Communication in the Past and Present is a scientific journal for historical communication research . It is published by the association "Working Group for Historical Communication Research". Gaby Falböck is currently the chairwoman of the association. The magazine is based at the Institute for Media and Communication Studies at the University of Vienna and has been published quarterly since 1986.

Content

medien & zeit deals critically and interdisciplinary with the methods and problems of communication history. In a review section, newly published publications from the subject are presented in each issue. In particular, the magazine has made a major contribution to the critical reappraisal of the National Socialist past of journalism and communication studies, the National Socialist newspaper studies.

History of origin

On November 13, 1986 the association "Working Group for Historical Communication Research (AHK)" was founded by Wolfgang Duchkowitsch, Fritz Hausjell, Theodor Venus, Peter Malina and Oliver Rathkolb . From the beginning, the club members worked on a voluntary basis. The first edition of medien & zeit appeared as a double issue in May 1986 on the occasion of the conference “Paths to Communication History”. In 2002, the working group presented the results of a conference on the topic of “Dealing with the subject with National Socialist newspaper studies” in a booklet, thus triggering important discourses within journalism and communication studies. The magazine's articles are not limited to the German-speaking area: in 2003, communication historians from Hungary , Slovakia and the Czech Republic were invited to give an overview of the origins and development of the subject in their home country in medien & zeit give. In the last years, especially since 2008, there has been an increasing focus on international guest editorships for individual themed issues and on issue-related cooperation with international specialist societies. Issue 4/2008, for example, was published in cooperation with the Department of Communication History of the German Society for Media and Communication Studies (DGPuK), Issue 4/2009 in cooperation with the Society for Media Studies (GfM), Issue 4/2010 in cooperation with Young Scholars Network of the ECREA (YECREA) and the NAKOGE (Young Talent Forum Communication History in the DGPuK). Issues 3/2011 and 4/2011 were designed in cooperation with the Communication History Section of ECREA, issue 1/2012 in cooperation with the "Verein Gedenkdienst".
