The Alteinsee is a mountain lake located at 2251 m near Arosa in Graubünden in Switzerland .
Location and origin of name
The lake is located on Altein Tiefenberg , an alpine plateau in the Strela chain , south of the Arosa reservoir between the Alteiner Riegel and the Alteiner Fürggli , surrounded by Schiesshorn , Wasmagrat , Strel , Valbellahorn , Sandhubel and Leidflue , and west of the Alteingrat . The name Altein comes from Alp Tein, the old name for the alpine area of Davos Wiesen ( Rhaeto-Romanic Tein ).
Geology and fauna
The Alteinsee lies in a sparsely vegetated sandstone basin and is dammed by a dolomite layer rising slightly to the north . Its outflow is the Alteinbach, which is interrupted by several imposing waterfalls (old incursions) over various karst steps . It lies in the area of the Arosa Dolomites . Due to its altitude, the lake is not home to any significant permanent animal population, but now and then pintail ducks can be seen .
use
The Alteinsee is not used directly for tourism. In summer, the often used mountain hiking trail towards Alteiner Fürggli- Davos Glaris / Wiesen, Valbella Furgga-Sandhubel, Leidfluefurgga - Murterus - Welschtobel and Schiesshorn Furgga - Schiesshorn / Maienfelder Furgga leads past it. In winter, various variant runs lead from the above-mentioned peaks and crossings down to the lake and on towards Isel- Arosa. A little above the lake is the Alteinhütta on the hiking trail , a shepherd's hut, which is used by the current owners of the alp , the communities of Alvaschein , Brienz and Surava , for the summer of their Brown cattle .
Old one way project
In 1936/37, an initiative committee led by Beat Stoffel from Arosa, the owner of the Stoffelhütte on the Weisshorn , launched the idea of building a cable car from the Hubelsee in Arosa to the Alteinsee in order to open up the area for summer and winter sports. However, the project could not be implemented - mainly due to competing construction projects such as the Tschuggenbahn and the construction of the first Arosa ski lifts.
