In 1965, the Ranger 8 space probe hit this spot after taking 7137 photographs of the moon. Four years later, on July 20, 1969, the Apollo 11 mission landed in the mare , with it the first humans set foot on the moon. The landing site of the first manned moon landing (0.8 ° N, 23.5 ° E) with the part of the lunar module that was left behind was named " Tranquility Base ".
