Seafood (chocolate)
Seafood ( Fruits de mer ) is the name of an originally Belgian praline product made from dark and light chocolate and a nougat filling, the shapes of which represent various types of seafood and other animals: seahorses , clams , mussels , starfish and various water snails . They are sold by specialist retailers, supermarkets, but also - as homemade products - by confectioners .
The Belgian manufacturer Guylian from Antwerp claims to be the first to market pralines in the form of seafood. The confectionery has been producing this specialty since the 1960s, initially by hand and later using automated production processes. Belgian dark chocolate with a 34 percent cocoa content is used for the branded products, and extra dark seafood with 74 percent cocoa content is used for the product .
In the meantime, copycat products are also being offered by the larger German discounters . Sugar-free pralines in this form and seafood pralines from the fair trade partner Oxfam have also been on the market since 1996 .
