Mermaid

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The mermaid or also known as fishwife and seawife has entered heraldry as a naked (crowned) woman with a mythical creature that transitions from the hips into a simple or split fishtail . It is modeled on the mystical nature of the Melusine . This name is also used in heraldic literature. The divided tail is drawn up in coats of arms to the right and left of the woman's body and is held by the mermaid. The fishtail is scaly emblazoned in a heraldic color scheme ( tinging) highlighted in the coat of arms field. In the English, but also French heraldry, it is also used as a shield holder .

There are also poor mermaids. These are from the early days of heraldry. The male form is called Aquarius or Triton . The male top with the fish tail also holds a trident in the coat of arms .
