description
The four meter high Meescheberg lies on a ridge running in an east-west direction. It offers a wide view of the northern Harz foreland to the Harz with the Brocken . The oval burial mound with a diameter of about 31 to 45 meters belongs to a group of burial mounds between Elm and Asse , which are considered to be princely and princess graves . These include the Galgenberg with a diameter of 20 meters north of Klein Vahlberg, the Tumulus of Evessen , the partially destroyed Muspott near Eilum and two other mounds near Evessen that were excavated and removed in the 18th century . The graves dominated the landscape due to their location on hilltops. The only grave mound excavated recently is the one about 1 km north of the Meescheberg and around 1800 BC. Gallows mountain, to which there is a visual relationship. During an excavation in 1907, a woman buried in the 7th century was found in it, who can be counted among the upper class of the local population based on the precious grave goods.
