Together with Sigri Megalonisi forms a local community (Τοπική Κοινότητα) in the municipality of Eresos-Andissa in the municipality of Dytiki Lesvos .

location

The elongated island forms the western end of the maximum 23 m deep Bay of Sigri (Όρμος του Σιγρίου) and protects the largest natural harbor of Lesbos from the often strong winds. The small rock island Kavalouros (Καβαλούρος) is 1.3 km southwest.

Settlement

During the late Bronze Age there was a settlement near the southern tip. Today there are only two buildings on the island, a 20 m high lighthouse and the small chapel Agios Georgios (Άγιος Γεώργιος). Megalonisi can be reached from Sigri by boat.
