Megalonotus praetextatus is a bug fromthe Rhyparochromidae family .

features

The bugs are 3.9 to 5.1 millimeters long. Like all representatives of the genus, they have a darkly colored pronotum, especially roughly dotted at the back . The scutellum (label) is also black. At the transition to the membrane, a wide black band runs over the corium and the cuneus. The membrane has a dark brown-black area. The front femora (thighs) are thickened and have one long and several small teeth. Megalonotus praetextatus can be identified by the fact that its pronotum is smooth and hairless and has a glossy surface. The legs are brownish yellow, only the front thighs ( femora ) are dark in color. The apical ends of the first and second antennae are yellow-brown in color, while the third and fourth antennae are completely black.

distribution and habitat

The species is distributed from North Africa across the Mediterranean area to the south of Scandinavia and the British Isles. In the east, the distribution area extends from Southeastern Europe and Asia Minor over the Caucasus to the Caspian region. In Germany the species is widespread and mostly common, it only occurs locally in the northern German lowlands. In Austria it is rarer and so far only proven from the East and from East Tyrol. It is rare and local in Great Britain, especially on the coasts in the south. Dry, sunny habitats with sandy and calcareous soils such as grasslands, ruderal and fallow areas are settled.

Way of life

The animals are apparently in a certain way bound to plant species of the cranesbill family (Geraniaceae) such as herons' beaks ( Erodium ) and cranesbills ( Geranium ), but they also suck on the seeds of other plants.
