Mega radio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Megaradio was a private radio program that was broadcast on medium wave in Germany and Luxembourg (RTL broadcaster Marnach ) from 1997 to 2003 . In Germany, the transmitter was based in Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf and Schwerin.

history

The operators of Megaradio tried to get all free medium wave frequencies available in Germany in order to be able to broadcast their program in FM quality on medium wave after the introduction of DRM . To set up the Megaradio transmitters, some medium-wave frequencies that were not originally provided for in the Geneva Wave Plan for locations in Germany and were only coordinated for locations in Germany in the mid-1990s, were used for the first time, although these were also broadcast from locations where previously a medium wave transmitter was never operated. For this purpose, some major modifications had to be carried out. Megaradio was also fed into the German cable network via the teletext signal from GIGA / NBC Europe . However, reception was only possible via a PC with a TV card and special mega radio software. Later on, Megaradio decided to use the blanking interval to send a different program than the live stream and so MP3 streams with title information were also sent from now on . The other program was called " Megaradio.mp3 ". On Astra 19.2 ° East, Megaradio temporarily occupied a sound sub-carrier behind the analog transponder from Tele 5 .

Megaradio wanted to offer advertisers a national platform to specifically address 12 to 24 year olds. In an international comparison, Germany was supplied with relatively few private radio stations and radio advertising still had a very local character.

However, it was not possible to introduce the DRM process into regular operations before 2003. Megaradio had serious financial problems as of March 2003. The reasons were the high rental costs for the channels, some of which were very powerful, external services from Antenne Bayern and a lack of advertising income. Megaradio was forced to raise its audience quotas independently and therefore very laboriously in order to attract the targeted national advertising customers. There was an internal dispute between the shareholders about the future of the station, with the consequence that no more investments were made. On March 17, 2003, Megaradio filed for bankruptcy . The former managing director Michael Oplesch had contractually guaranteed several companies, including the Deutsche Fernsehnachrichten Agentur and McDonald’s , more money than was available and also rented expensive rental properties over the long term.

On April 4, 2003 at 1 p.m. Megaradio ceased broadcasting due to bankruptcy.
