Mehdi Bej Frashëri

Mehdi Bej Frashëri (born February 28, 1874 in Frashër , † May 25, 1963 in Rome ) was an Albanian politician. He was Prime Minister twice, initially from 1935 to 1936. The second term lasted from October 24 to November 3, 1943.

Life

Frashëri came from the same family as the brothers Naim Frashëri , Sami Frashëri and Abdyl Frashëri , but was not directly related to them. Frashëri held various positions in the Turkish administrative service, including being Governor General of Palestine and Vice-High Commissioner in Egypt. After Albania had declared itself independent, he became Prefect of Berat and the Albanian representative at the International Control Commission for Albania, which was supposed to accompany the establishment of Albania. During the First World War, Frashëri was in exile in Italy. Albania was occupied by French, Italian and British troops after the war ended, and Frashëri was part of an unofficial delegation that was supposed to represent the interests of Albania at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference . This delegation also included Myfit Libohova , Luigj Gurakuqi , Mihal Turtulli , Faik Konica and Turhan Pascha Përmeti . At the peace conference, Frashëri acted as Albanian foreign minister. After it became clear that nobody would support an Albanian state, the Lushnja Congress was convened in January 1920 , at which Albania again proclaimed independence.

From 1935 to 1936 he was Prime Minister of a government that was regarded as liberal. Due to a lack of support from the Albanian king , his government could not hold out. During the Second World War, the National Socialists reappointed Prime Minister from October 24 to November 3, 1943. He was then chairman of the Regency Council until he fled to Italy in 1944, where he also died.
