Mehmet Sabri Erbakan (born February 1, 1967 in Cologne ) is a German doctor and Muslim functionary. From April 2001 to October 2002 he was chairman and general secretary of the Islamic community Millî Görüş for many years and lives in Cologne / Bonn .

Life

Erbakan's mother is the converted German lawyer Amina Hanna Erbakan ( German-speaking Islamic Women's Community , DIF and Institute for International Education and Didactics , IPD), his father is the lawyer Akgün Erbakan, who died in the 1980s, and a younger brother of the Muslim Turkish politician Necmettin Erbakan . At 13, Erbakan took over the first position in the youth department of Milli Görüs.

He studied medicine in Cologne and was a functionary in the Muslim Student Union (MSV). Erbakan is married to a German and, through his younger sister Sahiba, is related by marriage to the Islamic multifunctional Ibrahim El-Zayat , who is also the manager of the European Mosque Construction and Support Association (EMUG), which is close to the milli-görüs . Erbakan was first deputy chairman of the EMUG since January 22, 1995 and secretary general of the IGMG since May 12, 1996. At the beginning of 2001 he finally took over the chairmanship of both organizations, which he surprisingly resigned in October 2002. Various reasons have been reported for Erbakan's surprising resignation from the IGMG chairmanship on October 20, 2002, including political, moral and health reasons.

During his presidency, Erbakan tried to push through a clear focus on Europe. His administration was characterized by the attempt to deepen the dialogue between the religions and integration efforts, B. by offering German courses, promoting women in the association and opening the association to German society. Despite his family ties in Turkey, in view of the knowledge that he would be a religious minority remaining in Germany, he advocated a departure from the traditional Turkey-oriented positions and promoted an attitude that created a space for a new one in dialogue with German society wanted to find a religious minority. The younger functionaries who grew up in Germany followed him, while the older generation wanted to stick to traditional forms. Despite the many successes in the policy he has taken, "the tension between what you (as chairman) de facto still represents and what you have not yet achieved," said Erbakan verbatim in an interview when asked why he resigned at the height of power.

Regardless of this, Erbakan's naturalization initiative also attracted attention from the protection of the constitution: At an event, Erbakan presented the advantages of German citizenship for achieving the “common goal” [political influence]. As German citizens, the Turks should marry Turks from Turkey. This is possible with little effort. This would make the spouses and children Germans too; This strengthens the community and brings it closer to its goal within five years, says Erbakan.
