Meier

The Meier was a city magazine for the Rhine-Neckar triangle . Between February 1986 and December 2012 it reported on the cultural and social life in Mannheim , Ludwigshafen am Rhein , Heidelberg and the surrounding area and was published monthly at a price of 2.90 euros ( August 2012 ). The monthly print run was 26,677 copies in 2011 (2nd quarter).

Meier emerged from the leaflet For Eye & Ear by the alternative concert promoter Mathias Graupner. At first it was purely a calendar for events, but editorial contributions were gradually added.

In the mid-1980s the magazine appeared under the name “Tempo”, but after a short time sold this name to the nationwide Zeitgeist magazine Tempo and took on its current name.

Until the mid-1990s, the Meier was still available free of charge as a display in bars and shops. In February 1994 the publisher then decided to convert to a paid magazine, which then comprised around 180 pages and was sold for two D-Marks per issue. In July 1997, the Meier went online and reached 30,000 copies in November, the highest circulation in its history.

The main focus of the Meier was the appointment calendar, but the editorial part formed an important counterweight to the daily newspapers in the region, which represent a quasi-monopoly in their cities.

In 2006 the Delta Medien publishing house, which publishes Meier, was taken over by Rheinpfalz-Verlag . At the end of 2012, the parent company Medien-Union decided to discontinue the magazine with the December issue because of “poor business figures for the coming year” and to shut down the Delta Medien publishing house. The Internet portal Meier Online, also produced by the publisher, as well as the regional gastronomy guide “Espresso”, the culture magazine “Spielzeit” and the Meier Long Night of Museums will be continued by the Rheinpfalz Group.
