The dairy in the New Garden is a brewery pub on the banks of the Jungfernsee at the northernmost tip of the New Garden in Potsdam .

history

The building was created according to plans by the master builder Carl Gotthard Langhans . The construction was carried out from 1790 to 1792 by Andreas Ludwig Krüger . In connection with the landscaping and the construction of the Marble Palace under Friedrich Wilhelm II , a dairy was set up to supply the court society.

In 1843/1844 Friedrich Wilhelm IV had the building expanded. According to a design by the architect Ludwig Persius , a second full floor was added under the direction of Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse and the south-west corner was emphasized by a tower. A crenellated wreath frames the roofs and gives the building a Norman character.

A second expansion took place after 1861 with the machine or pump house , which was set up to irrigate the New Garden. The tall, slender chimney is part of this technical upgrade. The high basin for the water inlet is located inside the Belvedere on the Pfingstberg .

After 1918, a restaurant was set up in the building, which was one of the most popular restaurants in Potsdam until the Second World War and was commonly known as the dairy .

The occupation by the Red Army at the end of 1945 and the destruction of part of the building by fire no longer allowed for gastronomic use. The dairy was still in this ruinous state when the Berlin Wall was built in 1961 .

After the fall of the Wall in 1991, renovation and restoration measures were carried out on the old building, which has been used by the Meierei im Neuen Garten GmbH brewery since 2003 .
