life and work

Potsdam, Alte Wache (1795–97)

Andreas Ludwig Krüger was the son of the brewer and landowner Ludwig Krüger in Potsdam.

A pupil of his uncle, he first studied painting, and in 1774 he joined the “Königliche Bau-Comptoir” in Potsdam as a draftsman and building manager, where he became (around 1790) court building officer and later senior building officer. As the most talented Potsdam character of the 18th century, he was the drawing teacher of Princes Louis Ferdinand and Friedrich Wilhelm (later King Friedrich Wilhelm III. ) Of Prussia from 1788 . Krüger initially worked as an architect under Carl von Gontard (1731–1791) and Georg Christian Unger (1743–1799). He headed the interior construction of the Marble Palace in Potsdam (1788–90) based on designs by Carl Gotthard Langhans and was also responsible for the execution of numerous buildings in the adjoining New Garden .

In the urban area, the guard house (1795–97) and the elegant former horse-drawn stables on the Neuer Markt (1787–91) have been preserved, probably his most characteristic buildings in Potsdam, as well as several houses he built. In his independent achievements as an architect, Krüger was strongly influenced by Gontard's braid style and, above all, Unger's, so that it is difficult to grasp his own formal language in all details and to distinguish it from others. Krüger also created significant works as a copper engraver: the best known is his series of Potsdam views. Between 1779 and 1781 he created twelve engravings based on his own designs, which were published with others in 1798. He made the templates for some of Johann Friedrich Meyer's Potsdam vedutas and also emerged as a painter himself. His life and work require scientific processing.

On April 22, 1773, he married Marie Friederike Meyer (1752–1843), daughter of the painter Johann Friedrich Meyer. His son Friedrich Ludwig Carl Krüger (* around 1774 in Potsdam; † 1828 there) also worked as an architect and engraver. In the 18th century, Andreas Ludwig Krüger was the first master of the chair of the Freemason Lodge Teutonia in Potsdam, which was located in Benkertstrasse 3.
