Georg Christian Unger (born May 25, 1743 in Bayreuth ; † February 20, 1799 in Berlin ) was a German architect and builder of Frederick the Great in Potsdam and Berlin. He is one of the most important artists of the Frederician Rococo .

Life

He studied at the Academy in Bayreuth with Carl von Gontard and later, like his teacher, went to Potsdam and Berlin and worked as a conductor with Johann Gottfried Büring . After Gontard moved to Potsdam and Berlin, he was his closest collaborator for years and completed his training. According to Unger's own designs, town houses as well as public and military buildings were built in Potsdam.

In 1787 Unger became Oberhofbaurat, in 1788 he became director of the Immediatbaukommission .

Unger supplied the designs for around 260 buildings, many of which he realized himself. He developed a new type of building based on Frederick II's demands : the Bürgerpalais, a bourgeois residential building with the appearance of a palace. Unger also created a large number of buildings in Berlin: 40 Unter den Linden alone , 13 Palais on Gendarmenmarkt and over 40 on Leipziger Strasse .

Georg Christian Unger died in Berlin in 1799 at the age of 55. He was buried in the cemetery of the Dorotheenstadt and Friedrichswerder communities in front of the Oranienburger Tor . The grave has not been preserved.
