The Oranienburger Tor was on Friedrichstraße, initially north of Linienstraße . The Oranienburgerstraße led diagonally at goal. Later the excise wall and with it the gate on Torstrasse were moved forward. The area inside the excise wall was called Spandauer Vorstadt , the outside Oranienburger Vorstadt . Only a colored plaster gable design is reminiscent of the historical building.

history

In 1705 a picket fence was built along the Linienstraße , which was included in the excise wall from 1734-1736. Since then, the Oranienburger Tor has existed on the arterial road leading towards Oranienburg . In 1787/1788 a representative new building was erected in its place by Carl von Gontard . It was shaped like a Roman triumphal arch with two smaller passages for pedestrians on both sides and a wider passage for vehicles in the middle.

After the excise wall was lifted and the city was expanded several times, the gate and other gates were demolished as a traffic obstacle. Albert Borsig (1829-1878) - son August Borsig (1804-1854) and owner of the locomotive factory on the opposite street corner - acquired two sandstone - trophies from the jewelry of the door and put it on the brick pillars of the entrance gate of his newly acquired goods (the former Itzenplitz Castle) in Groß Behnitz in Havelland . This gate was restored around 1980.
