The Socialist Left (SL) is a current within the party Die Linke . It sees itself as “ union- oriented” and, according to its own understanding, ties in with “ left-socialist , left-social-democratic and reform-communist positions”. It was founded on August 19, 2006 in Wuppertal and represents left Keynesian and neo-Marxist positions. She is observed by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and classified as left-wing extremist and openly extremist.

The socialist left is judged and observed as “left-wing extremist”. The SL was convinced that the GDR was a “legitimate attempt to build an alternative to capitalism on German soil”.

The union- oriented socialist left (SL) is striving for a modern socialist membership party according to its own statements. The current currently has over 800 members. She is mainly involved in political education . The founding members of the SL come mainly from the environment of the former WASG , including a number of full-time union officials, but increasingly also from the party's youth and student association . The current consists of fifteen members of the Bundestag, one member of the European Parliament and six members of state parliaments. The SL is since the year 2012, a debate booklet entitled realistic and radically out. The current regularly calls for the summer academy of the SoLi e. V. in the education center of the ver.di union in Bielefeld-Sennestadt. At the annual general meetings of the SL and in the context of the summer academies, u. a. It underlines the demand for a stronger taxation of high wealth and capital income as well as the strengthening of domestic demand through an expansion of public investments, a dynamic wage development and the implementation of Agenda 2010 and the expansion of the welfare state . The SL emphasizes the necessity of public ownership or public control of the financial sector, important key industries , public services and economic democracy . She calls for the party Die Linke to concentrate on the common interests of employees, unemployed and pensioners. a. Approaches for an unconditional basic income (UBI). The SL also rejects the current EU treaties and represents Euro-Keynesian positions.

The member of the national spokesman's council of the SL, the union secretary Ralf Krämer (department economic policy ver.di), belonged to the editorial committee for the basic program of the party Die Linke. The suggestion of dual leadership Katja Kipping and Bernd Riexinger for the party chairmanship of the Left was brought into the debate by the SL. He finally prevailed at the Göttingen party congress of the left. The SL had previously welcomed Oskar Lafontaine 's renewed willingness to take over the chairmanship of the party , who, however, withdrew his candidacy on the grounds that he wanted to enable the party to start over beyond the existing lines of confrontation. The SL repeatedly criticized the fact that disputes about the course of the left took place via the mass media instead of in the party's democratically legitimized bodies.

The Socialist Left in the 19th German Bundestag includes Matthias W. Birkwald , Christine Buchholz , Nicole Gohlke , Fabio De Masi , Norbert Müller , Alexander Neu , Sören Pellmann , Victor Perli , Ingrid Remmers , Bernd Riexinger , Alexander Ulrich , Kathrin Vogler , Harald Weinberg , Katrin Werner .

With Fabio De Masi , the SL was able to send a representative of the current to the newly constituted European Parliament in Brussels in the 2014 European elections .
