Milestone (Bernburg Süd)

Prussian all-mile obelis Bernburg

The milestone in the south of Bernburg is a small monument in the town of Bernburg (Saale) in the Salzlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt .

The Principality of Anhalt-Bernburg pushed like a wedge into the Prussian territories. Prussia had to make agreements with the small state for the planned road from Magdeburg via Halle (Saale) to Großkugel on the Saxon border. Construction was decided in 1786 and started two years later; Anhalt-Bernburg was reached in 1792, but construction was initially delayed, so that the final completion of the entire route was not completed until 1801. The Prussian Staatschaussee was created in the section between Bernburg and Halle up to 1797. The milestones along the Chaussee from Bernburg to Halle were set up in 1800 at the latest, but probably as early as 1797, as they had been acquired years earlier.

This makes it special that there is a Anhalt and a Prussian all-round milestone in Bernburg. The Prussian is in the south, the Anhalt in the north of the city. The Prussian one is located on Hallesche Landstrasse at the bridge over the salt railway and is a full-mile obelisk, as it used to be found at Garsena and Trebitz , where the obelisk is missing today. It is under monument protection and has been included in the monument register with the number 094 60651. The obelisk bears the distance information 6 miles from Magdeburg , 1/2 mile from Bernburg and 5 miles from Halle as well as the indication FWR III ( King Friedrich Wilhelm III. Of Prussia ). It was removed for railway construction in 1968 and was left unnoticed by the roadside for a long time and was only put up again in 1982 on a citizens' initiative.
