The forest hoof village Ottendorf was first mentioned on March 5, 1336. The town's chapel was first mentioned in a document in 1508. The church of Ottendorf, probably from the 15th century, was completely destroyed by fire in 1624. The rectory and with it large parts of the church archive and all church records were destroyed in 1669.

Ottendorf was under the lordship of the Lichtenwalde manor in the Electoral Saxon Office Lichtenwalde , which was administered from 1696 by the Electoral Saxon Office Frankenberg-Sachsenburg and from 1783 by the Electoral Saxon or later Royal Saxon Office Augustusburg . After the end of the Saxon constitution of offices in 1856, Ottendorf was the jurisdiction of the Mittweida court office . From 1875 the municipality of Ottendorf belonged to the Rochlitz administration . The school building near the church, popularly known as the "old schoolhouse", was built in 1828. There is evidence of a school in the village as early as 1669. The new school building, inaugurated in 1888, now houses the local elementary school. Mining is documented in the eastern area of Ottendorf for the 18th century (at the old inn on Krumbacher Straße) and the 19th century ("Neue Hoffnung Gottes Stolln" and "Auguststolln" south of Krumbacher Straße at the exit of Ottendorf towards Krumbach). Lime was mined in Ottendorf as early as 1440 in the meadow above the Biensdorf valley. Only remains of the Ottendorf limestone quarries from the 19th century are left.

The road from Chemnitz via Ottendorf to Mittweida was completed in 1832. On January 1st, 1852, the Riesa – Chemnitz railway was inaugurated , spanning Ottendorfer Hauptstrasse with a viaduct. The “Ottendorf” stop on the railway line was not opened until 1880. The voluntary fire brigade Ottendorf was founded in 1891. Between April 15 and April 26, 1945 Ottendorf was briefly occupied by American troops until April 7/8. May 1945 Soviet troops took over the administration.

As a result of the second district reform in the GDR , the Ottendorf community became part of the Hainichen district in the Chemnitz district in 1952 (renamed the Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ), which was continued in 1990 as the Saxon district of Hainichen . After its dissolution, the place belonged to the Mittweida district since 1994 , which was added to the central Saxony district in 2008. The municipality of Krumbach with its district Biensdorf was incorporated on December 1, 1994. In the course of the municipal reform in Saxony in 1999, the municipalities of Auerswalde , Lichtenau and Ottendorf were merged into a new municipality, the name of which was only determined by a referendum on May 28, 2000 as "Lichtenau"; 51% of those entitled to vote decided on this.

The west of Ottendorf is crossed by the Riesa – Chemnitz railway line via a viaduct. On the railway line opened in 1852, however, the place has only had a stop in the north-west of the place since 1880, at which, with the introduction of the Chemnitz model , with a few exceptions, only the Chemnitz City Bahn trains on the Chemnitz-Mittweida line stop.
