Meinher of Neuchâtel
Meinher von Neuenburg (* before 1246; † 1280 ) was bishop of Naumburg from 1272 to 1280 .
Life
Meinher came from the Meinheringer clan . He was the son of Burgrave Hermann II of Neuchâtel (* before 1215; † between March 29, 1269 and July 18, 1271) and his wife, Countess Gertrud von Mansfeld († after 1230). His brother Meinher founded the line of the Burgraves of Meissen . Two other brothers, of ten known siblings, were canons at Naumburg Cathedral .
He had been provost of the cathedral in Naumburg since 1245 and already represented Dietrich II of Meißen in this position . In December 1272 he was elected Bishop of Naumburg-Zeitz and represented , at least formally, his position as a clerical territorial lord towards the Wettins . In order to reduce the debts of his predecessor, he sold some goods of his diocese and was able to stabilize the status of the diocese again through family relationships.
He was hardly involved in imperial affairs, but mainly participated in church organization tasks. So he stayed at the council in Lyon in 1274 , took part in the ordination of Christian von Mühlhausen as bishop of Samland and above all regulated his diocese affairs. After Meinher had given various indulgences , his relationship with the Roman Curia and that of his neighboring brothers in office deteriorated in 1277 . The reason was the claim to the tithe by Nicholas III. , which the bishops refused, after which they were put under the papal ban . Meinher died between August 20 and mid-November 1280 without being released from the papal ban. The location of his grave is unknown, the news about his burial in Meißen comes from the Taubesche Chronik of the historical forger Johann Georg Rauhe .
