Life

The illegitimate son of Margrave Dietrich von Meißen and a sister of Burgrave von Zeitz, Meinhard von Wolftitz, was domicellar at the Naumburg cathedral chapter, pastor in Torgau , canon in Naumburg from 1213 and provost from 1230. With the help of his half-brother, Margrave Heinrich the Illustrious , he prevailed against Peter von Hagin, who was elected by the majority of the cathedral chapter on June 5, 1243, as Bishop of Naumburg. After Peter had intervened unsuccessfully against this approach, Dietrich II. Was finally by Siegfried III. consecrated by Eppstein after papal dispensation in 1245.

In the disputes between Pope Innocent IV and Emperor Friedrich II , he leaned towards the party of the Pope and the anti-king Heinrich Raspe , but apart from various missions to protect other dioceses, he was not involved in imperial politics.

Due to the territorial interests of Heinrich the Illustrious, Dietrich soon came into conflict with him. In the Thuringian War of Succession he supported Sophie von Brabant against the Wettin claims. The pressure on him increased when Margrave Heinrich acquired the Pleißenland in 1253/56 . In addition, the Meissen Bishop Konrad I of Wallhausen came to the Naumburg possessions in his diocese. On April 25, 1259 in Seusslitz he had to recognize the patronage of the Wettins for the diocese of Naumburg in a contract, and grind down the fortifications of the city of Zeitz and several castles. In 1268 he reconciled his nephews Albrecht and Dietrich, who had quarreled over the lands that their father had ceded to them .

Dietrich II, who resumed the interrupted construction of the Naumburg Cathedral , is probably depicted as a tumba on the steps in the east choir of the Naumburg Cathedral.
