Master of Viennese Adoration

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An Austrian painter from the Middle Ages in the early 15th century is known as the master of Viennese adoration . The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name after his picture of the adoration of the baby Jesus by the three kings . This work, created around 1415, is now in Vienna's Belvedere . It is a small-format panel painting 26 centimeters high and 22 centimeters wide.

In all likelihood, the Master of Viennese Adoration was active in Vienna himself. His style is still based strongly on South Bohemian painting from around 1390, as represented in particular by the master of Wittingau . However, the master of Viennese adoration developed his own Viennese local style in his pictures and thus founded a medieval Viennese art circle . He combines elements of an almost sculptural painting under the influence of new Italian painting of the Trecento with the traditional tradition of depiction of the drapery and strong colors of the Bohemian School of Painting .

Some art historians see the Master of Viennese Adoration as an important precursor or even teacher of Hans von Tübingen and the Master of the Offerings . He is also said to have influenced the master of the St. Lambrecht votive tablet .

In addition to his eponymous picture in Vienna, four Passion paintings are ascribed to the Master of Adoration in Vienna, today in Paris, as well as another Adoration of the Kings and a picture of Saint Margaret, both today in Budapest.
