Master of the Offerings

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a master of offerings or Darbringungsmeister ( English : Master of the Offering ) is a gothic referred painter who in 1430 the image of the Presentation in the Temple for the Stift Neukloster in Wiener Neustadt painted. The artist who is not known by name is assigned further works in art history by comparing styles.

Style and meaning

The master of the offerings was probably active in the region around Vienna from 1420 to 1435. His work is one of the most significant examples of art in the final phase of the Soft Style in this area. However, it is still being discussed whether some of the pictures carried under his emergency name could not come from other painters who remained anonymous.

The master of the offerings paints in a newer spatial manner of expression, more faithful to the depiction of reality than the master before, even if his representations e.g. B. the architecture does not necessarily show real examples. His style of painting suggests an influence by contemporary Flemish painting and book illumination from France such as the Boucicaut master .

Stylistic closeness to other painters

The style of the master of the offerings is close to that of the master of the St. Lambrecht votive tablet ; it is also proposed to assign both painters to one workshop. An influence of the master von Wittingau should also be recognizable.
