As a master of Crispinuslegende one is late Gothic painter called. The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name from the altarpiece he created around 1520, which depicts the saints Crispinus and Crispinianus in their shoemaker's workshop. The work can now be found in the Belvedere Gallery in Vienna.

Origin of the master

The origin of the master of the Crispinus legend was first sought in the Salzburg area . More recent research, however, see him more likely working in Thuringia , where he is said to have settled in Franconia after training .

Creative period and style

The master of the Crispinus legend was probably active between 1513 and 1525 and was probably influenced by painters from the so-called Danube School during his training period in southern Germany . His style is primarily close to that of Albrecht Altdorfer , whose work he, like that of Martin Schongauer or Lucas Cranach , seems to use as models.
