Master of the Love Gardens - The Great Love Garden, copper engraving, Netherlands, 15th century
Cod. Pal. germ. 4, sheet 50r: Rudolf von Ems, Willehalm von Orlens , glued copper engraving of lovers , attributed to the master of the love gardens

In the history of art, a Dutch engraver who was probably active in the Netherlands in the middle of the 15th century is referred to as the master of the love gardens . The artist , who is not known by name , was named after two of his engravings depicting the love garden. A total of around 26 engravings are ascribed to the master.

In terms of art history, the master is less important because of his artistic achievement, but more as one of the earliest engravers as a craftsman in the Netherlands. His representations are considered to be somewhat crude in execution and show little spatial depth and details. However, his work shows the beginning of the path of illustration away from painted miniatures in manuscripts to copper engraving and later to industrial printing. The master's engravings are still relatively small and allow the conclusion that they were intended as illustrations that were glued into manuscripts, as in Konrad Bollstater's copy (completed in 1458) of the verse novel Willehalm von Orlens ( Cod. Pal. Germ. 4 , Sheet 50r).
