Master of the Sibyl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Master of the Sibylle ( French Maître de la Sibylle ) was an emergency name given to an engraver of a group of copperplate engravings until they were recognized as the work of the engraver and monogrammist Meister ES . The series of engravings from around 1460 contains a representation of the Sibyl of Tibur explaining his vision of the birth of Christ to the Emperor Augustus. The engraving can be found today in the Louvre in Paris. This and the other works in the series are considered to be an early work by the master ES because of their artistry, which is otherwise not the same as the other works

This master of the Sibyl should not be confused with a Gothic painter who was also given an emergency name, the Master of the Tiburtine Sibyl .
