The Thyen shipyard in Brake was a shipyard that existed from 1876 to 1916.

History of the Thyen shipyard (1876–1916)

With the takeover of the dry dock built in Brake in 1848 for the German Reichsflotte , the history of this shipyard began in 1876, which initially only dealt with docking and repairs of ships based on the dry dock. The construction work began in 1894, in that year the three-masted schooner Bussard was delivered to F. Thyen as the first ship . In 1916 the shipyard was closed as an independent company.

Takeover of the Frerichswerft (1916–1920)

In 1916 the Thyen shipyard was taken over by the Frerichswerft , initially mainly repair work on ships was carried out, from 1919 the new construction business was continued. Another three sailing loggers and two motor loggers with around 120 GRT were built by 1920, mainly for the Bremen-Vegesack fishing company .

Ships built at the Thyen shipyard

From 1898, the shipyard mainly produced sailing loggers , which were used as herring loggers to catch herring with the use of drift nets . Most of the loggers were delivered to the local Braker herring fishery . In addition, however, the Elsflether herring fishery was also an important customer, and from 1907 the empty herring fishery also became a customer. Around 15 ships of this type of ship were delivered. Three lightships were also built at this shipyard. One of them, the Weser , was intended for the Brake buoy and beacon office. The other, the Ausseneider , was delivered to Tönning and the third, the Minsener Sand , was delivered to the Kaiserliche Werft Wilhelmshaven .

A total of over forty ships were delivered, in addition to the sailing loggers and lightships, there were gaff schooners , barges, a barge and a ferry.
