Eulbach is a hamlet in the Würzberg district in Michelstadt in the Odenwaldkreis in southern Hesse . The Eulbach Hunting Lodge and the Eulbacher Park are located here, and the remains of the Eulbach Roman fort were found here. The place gave its name and was the first location for the Eulbacher Markt .

Geographical location

Eulbach is located in the east of the urban area of Michelstadt on the Bavarian border on the ridge that separates the Mümlingtal in the west from the Mudtal in the east. The area around the hamlet is forested except for a few grassland areas such as the Große Hofwiese .

history

The oldest surviving documentary mention as Ulenbuch dates from 819. In Roman times, the Neckar-Odenwald-Limes ran on the Eulbacher ridge in a north-south direction and the Eulbach fort was located here. Since Eulbach lies at a height far from any significant watercourses, the historical form of the name Eulbuch would be more appropriate, derived from the beech forest mixed with oaks that was found in this area "and where there may have been many owls before it ".

It is documented that in 1398 Count Palatine Ruprecht enfeoffed the donor Eberhard von Erbach with the village of Eulbach. The village of Eulbach, which had 81 inhabitants out of 11 Huben in 1623 , died out in the Thirty Years' War as a result of arson and plague. In 1690, instead of the desolation of the whole district, a farm of the Counts of Erbach-Erbach was built . Areas not required for this were largely reforested. In 1806 the place came with the county of Erbach to the Grand Duchy of Hesse .

In 1962 Eulbach was incorporated into the neighboring village of Würzberg to the south. Eulbach came to Michelstadt on February 1, 1972, when Würzberg voluntarily joined the city of Michelstadt on the occasion of the regional reform in Hesse .

In 1771 Count Franz zu Erbach-Erbach had a hunting lodge built in Eulbach, which was expanded around 1800 and set up as a count's summer residence. In 1802 a forester's house, stables and east of the palace garden a large farmyard with hunting grounds were added. In 1846, Count Eberhard had the hunting lodge expanded into a small castle, which became the residence of the count's family. As early as 1795–98, Count Franz had a huge wildlife park of approx. 3,000 hectares created around Eulbach, but this was soon reduced in size and since 1912 has only covered a remaining area of around 400 hectares for deer, wild boar and bison. In the years 1802–1807, Count Franz had the English Garden laid out north of the hunting lodge , which as Eulbacher Park became a major attraction for visitors. Last but not least, Count Franz set up a duty-free market in 1802, which is still known as Eulbacher Markt , although it was moved to Erbach in 1824 and there acquired the name Erbacher Wiesenmarkt .

Transport and infrastructure

Eulbach is located on Bundesstrasse 47 , the Nibelungenstrasse , which leads from the core town of Michelstadt in the west past the hunting lodge via Boxbrunn to Amorbach in the east. To the west of Eulbach, the district road K 45 branches off the federal road to the south and leads through Würzberg to the state border in the direction of Breitenbuch . Just east of Eulbach, the L 3349 road branches off to the north and continues to Vielbrunn . There is no direct road connection to the geographically immediately neighboring village of Weiten-Gesäß .
