First mentioned in a document in 1113, the Rehbach church is one of the oldest church buildings in the Odenwald.

Rehbach is a district of Michelstadt in the Odenwaldkreis in southern Hesse .

history

Rehbach was mentioned for the first time in 1095 in a document which is handed down in the Lorsch Codex . The Rehbach church was first mentioned in 1113 and is still used as a cemetery chapel. The early church building is probably an own church , as indicated by finds of stone sarcophagi, including the burial place of the presumed donor couple. When it was first mentioned, the church was already owned by the Michelstadt-Steinbach Provost . The nave of the church was demolished in the 19th century, so that today only the choir tower has medieval substance.

Rehbach became a location for mining and metallurgy . Since 1576 there have been evidence of a Count's Erbach blast furnace . The furnace processed ores from Momart and Mossau . Just two years later the furnace was relocated to Zell , which probably means the Untere Hammer in Michelstadt. Slag found in Rehbach (numerous among others in the basement meadows ) have a high manganese content of 8%, which suggests an early date. After 1578 no more ore smelting can be documented. The foundation walls of buildings in the village lake are therefore likely to be older than 1578.

Due to the manganese content, the slag heaps were shut down in the First World War . For ore mining, many small lakes were dug to wash the ore. These include the Dorfsee, the Schafsee and the Rohrsee.

Rehbach was almost completely depopulated in the 17th century as a result of the Thirty Years War and epidemics. In 1701 13 people lived in two properties. Around 1970 there were 303 people living in Rehbach. Today there are around 600.

Territorial reform

On December 1, 1971, Rehbach, then with 292 inhabitants, voluntarily joined the city of Michelstadt on the occasion of the regional reform in Hesse . As for every district of Michelstädter, a local district with a local advisory council and a local mayor was established.

Culture

In the center of the village are the old school and the former Counts-Fürstenauische Oberförsterei, flanked by the Hohenloher Hof and the courtyard in the Nibelungenstrasse , which was created by merging several hubs as Counts-Erbachian hereditary leases , both of which are among the largest court rides in the entire district.

Rehbach is located on Bundesstrasse 47 , Nibelungenstrasse , which leads from Worms , Bensheim and Lindenfels in the west over the Spreng to Rehbach and on to the neighboring town of Michelstadt in the east.
