Wiesenmarkt 2018

The Erbacher Wiesenmarkt is the largest folk festival in South Hesse .

The festival begins in the penultimate full week in July and lasts ten days. The last market day is always the last Sunday in July. The meadow market opens on Fridays. On Thursdays, the citizens meet to celebrate on the festival site, but the exhibitors and restaurateurs are not yet allowed to sell anything. A highlight is the horse race that takes place on the second Sunday . Other highlights are the big fireworks on the first Friday (earlier the first Sunday) and on Wednesday. In addition to showmen and restaurants, there are also several exhibition halls with exhibitors (approx. 200) from the region, the European village and the "Südhessen Messe" outdoor area.

history

The meadow market (until the 1960s “ Eulbacher Markt ” or “ Eulbacher Wiesen (cattle) market ”) was a regionally important cattle, horse and farmer's market. Until the Thirty Years' War, Eulbach was a small trading center: this is where old trade routes crossed from the navigable Neckar via Beerfelden , from the former Hessian Bad Wimpfen via the Krähberg on the ridges of the Odenwald to the Main, to Miltenberg , Seligenstadt , Obernburg , and into Hanauische and coming from the Rhine valley from Worms and Speyer the classic Nibelungenstrasse via Eulbach in the direction of Main-Franconia to Bohemia and Saxony.

The Counts of Erbach-Erbach owned a zoo and a hunting lodge there . The cattle and farmers market was relocated to Erbach by the Counts of Eulbach in 1824. Until around 1960, the cattle and horse market with accompanying horse races and other equestrian sports was the main component of the “Eulbacher Markt”. The Schützenhaus at the entrance of the “Wiesenmarkt” indicates that the “Eulbacher Markt” actually took place in Erbach, at least in parts, in the middle of the 19th century: This is where the democratic revolutionaries met in 1848 and on the (today's Wiesenmarkt) site Next to the rifle house, the historic Odenwald people's assembly took place in 1848 under the leadership of the Michelstädter revolutionary and lawyer Ludwig Bogen .

In 1932, the Deutsche Reichsbahn issued reduced return tickets to visit the Wiesenmarkt for the first time.
