Master of the Amsterdam Mary Death: The Death of Mary (Mary on the Death Bed), c. 1500, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, from the holdings of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam

A Flemish painter who probably worked in Amsterdam or Utrecht around 1500 is known as the master of the Amsterdam Death of the Virgin .

Naming

The master of the Amsterdam Death of the Virgin Mary , who is not known by name , received his emergency name after his picture, which depicts the death of Mary , the mother of Jesus. The picture is now in the possession of the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum .

His motif, also known as Dormition, depicts Mary on her deathbed, which is why the master is known in Dutch as Meester van het Amsterdamse sterfbed van Maria .

The name-giving picture of the master came from the holdings of the Hofje van de Zeven Keurvorsten (House of the Seven Electors) in Amsterdam, so an emergency name such as Master of the House of the Seven Electors was suggested for the painter of the work in art history .

style

The master of the Amsterdam Death of the Virgin is stylistically counted among the old Dutch painters . His style of painting is said to be the forerunner of Jacob Cornelisz's technique . van Oostsanen .

Works (selection)

  • Death of Mary, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam (on loan from the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (inv.no.SK-A-3467))

A few other pictures are assigned to the master, including a portrait of a married couple, as is the death of the Virgin today in the Rotterdam Museum. The picture was recognized as the master's work by comparing the fashion and painting style of clothes.
