Master of the Bamberg Clear Altarpiece

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The late Gothic painter who worked in the city of Bamberg in Upper Franconia in the second half of the 15th century is known as the master of the Bamberg Clear Altar (or Master of the Bamberg Clear Altar ) . The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name from altarpieces he painted around 1470 with scenes from the life of the saint and founder of the order Clare . The seven pictures of the Klaren altar that have been preserved come from an altar from the Bamberg Clariss monastery .

The style of the master of the Bamberg Klaren Altarpiece is influenced by the old Dutch painting of his time. This painting style, which comes mainly from Flanders, is at the transition from the late Gothic to the early Renaissance . The master's pictures are characterized by the precise observation and classification of the figures in the perspective of the pictures, as well as the closeness to reality of the decorative details. The master was also familiar with the engravings by Martin Schongauer , who probably worked in the workshop of Hans Pleydenwurff in Nuremberg around 1470 and also dealt with the new naturalistic painting style from Flanders.

The pictures of the Clare altar are each about 100 by 100 centimeters and show, among other things, how Clare learned the teachings of St. Francis receives the handing over of the rule of the order by Pope Innocent IV to Clare and Clare in supplication with the appearance of the Christ child. A picture with the stigmatization of St. Francis is counted among the pictures of the master .

The pictures can now be found in the holdings of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen and are exhibited in the State Gallery in the New Residence in Bamberg. They are considered to be masterpieces of late Gothic panel painting in Franconia .
