Master of the Landau Altar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The master of the Landau Altar is a Gothic painter who worked in Nuremberg from around 1450 until around 1484 . The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name after an altar he painted for the local Katharinenkirche . This was donated by the Landauer family from Nuremberg .

The wings of the altar painted by the master show the engagement of St. Catherine and the crucifixion of Christ , on the inside they show the birth and resurrection of Christ . The picture of the resurrection shows the donor portrait of Elisabeth Landauer in the habit of a nun , she was a nun in the Katharinenkloster Nuremberg and died there in 1475; the donor portrait at the birth of Christ is supposed to represent her father Markus (also Marx) Landauer, who died in 1468.

The altar wings made of fir wood of the former high altar of St. Catherine's Church are now in the collection of the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg on permanent loan from the Bavarian State Painting Collections . The master or his environment is also given a picture of St. Assigned to Catherine.

The son of Marcus Landauer donated another altar in Nuremberg in 1511, which is also called the Landau altar . Albrecht Dürer created the altarpiece for this work .
