Authors Gallery Kostka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The authors gallery Kostka ( spelling AUTOREN GALERIE KOSTKA ) was an artistic exhibition project in the water tower of the former Sidol works in Cologne-Braunsfeld . The project was carried out between 1991 and 1999. The previous conversion of the water tank into an exhibition space, which was awarded national and international architecture prizes, enabled the exhibiting artists to create extensive image, sound and light installations.

history

Water tower

After the merger of the Chemische Werke Siegel & Co. ( Sidol-Werk ) located here with the Düsseldorf Thompson-Werke and later takeover by Henkel in 1971, production was relocated to Düsseldorf in the 1980s. In 1991, on the initiative of the architect and artist Norbert Kostka , an exhibition project was brought to life in the empty water tower of the Sidol factory, which was built by Otto Müller-Jena from 1926 to 1928 . In the 1990s, the no longer used factory complex on Eupener Strasse provided studio space for numerous Cologne artists. The project was terminated because the intention in 2000 was to demolish the industrial complex , which was listed in 1998 .

Art concept

Space in space

As part of his architectural concept of creating spaces , which he has already applied to other objects, Kostka first converted the container space of the water tower into an accessible sculpture . The room, 5.0 × 6.0 × 6.0 meters in size, contains a former water reservoir that is 3.0 × 3.7 × 3.8 meters in size and open at the top. Under the ceiling of the outside area there are two ribbon windows opposite each other, each with three windows. He removed all technical elements and broke through the container walls with four door-sized openings. The walls were painted white. After the intervention, a labyrinthine structure was created based on the “space in space” principle. An intermediate gallery made of gratings made it possible to view the room from all perspectives. The public space presentation took place on December 6, 1992. Another example of the concept is the Uevekoven water tower .

The concept of the conversion of the water tower, which has won several architecture prizes, created the spatial requirements for setting up a gallery.

gallery

After the completion of the newly acquired “room within a room” concept, the water tower was used permanently as an exhibition space. Because of its Polish origins, Kostka called the exhibition project authors' gallery , which can be interpreted as a producer's gallery . The gallery was based on the concept of inviting artists of the most varied of styles and media, who could use the space as a performance area to confront the visitor with a wide variety of spatial perceptions. The first artist who dealt creatively with space was the architectural photographer Tomas Riehle .

Exhibitions (excerpt)

In the eight years of its existence, numerous internationally recognized exhibitions by renowned artists have taken place in the gallery. In 1995 and 1997, the gallery in the water tower was one of the venues for the Cologne International Photo Scene , which is held in cooperation with the Photokina .

  • Seyed Mohammad Oreyzi : Period - a spatial staging (blocks of ice, iron crosses, neon light), December 12, 1992 to January 11, 1993

"The ice sculptures definitely correspond to the (very cold) room climate, which is also soaked in a cool yet diffuse neon light.-Zeitraum- is an installation of four ice cubes (50 × 50 × 50 cm), each placed on the room axes, There is an iron cross on each cube. This work demonstrates limited duration, transience - as the ice gradually melts away. But for the duration of its presence, the installation adds its own "icy" aura to the room, an addition to the already frosty one that can also be physically experienced Gallery space. (Es) "

"Frances Scholz succeeded in accentuating the sculptural character of the room by installing her paintings. In the almost one meter wide corridor around the central room directly behind the door openings, the artist hung three of her paintings just above the walls of the interior the skylights of the almost six meter high outer space. The narrowness and height of the tour was a provocation for the artist for her paintings, because he refused to look at them from a distance, but at the same time could evoke entirely new perspectives. Look at the pictures from the greatest possible distance , you mostly only saw a fragment of the painting behind the wall - a paradoxical phenomenon when the perspective of a picture viewed from close up can usually only be a fragmentary one.
