Master of the Riedener Altar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Gothic painter who is unknown by name and who worked in Bavarian Swabia in the third quarter of the 15th century , possibly in Kempten , Memmingen or in the Ottobeuren monastery, is referred to as the master of the Riedener Altar . The master got his emergency name after an altar he created around 1470, which was in the Marienkirche in Rieden am Forggensee until 1812 . This work, known in art history as the Riedener Altar, can be seen today in the State Gallery of the High Castle in Füssen . The master's early style shows the influence of the tradition of his predecessors in the region, as well as the influence of French book illumination of his time, the style of which can also be found in the pictures attributed to him as later works such as the Günzburg proclamation plaque.

Nine panel paintings, probably created in 1470/80 for the monastery church of the Franciscan nuns in Kaufbeuren , are attributed to him, which are now in the "Coena Domini" church of the Ducal Georgianum in Munich. The panels are divided into two image fields, of which the lower one contains a representation of a scene of the Way of the Cross and the upper image fields of the seven middle panels contain a symbolic stylized representation of one of the seven main Roman churches and the patron saint belonging to it , the upper image fields the two framing ones Boards show other scenes. Some of the works that have also been attributed to the master by comparing styles can be found in the Diocesan Museum in Rottenburg am Neckar .
