Master of Frankfurt

The Master of Frankfurt (* 1460 ; † 1533?) Was a Flemish Renaissance painter whose name is unknown today . The emergency name does not come from its origin, but from the fact that his most important works, a crucifixion triptych with the portraits of the Humbracht family and the Anne Altar were commissioned in Frankfurt am Main .

In 1841, Passavant assigned the Humbracht triptych from the Städelsche Kunstinstitut to the Frankfurt painter Conrad Fyoll (around 1425–1486). Donner refuted this ascription by Richter (1896) and Friedländer (1917). In 1897, the then director of the Städel, Heinrich Weizsäcker, described a group of works that he assigned to a "Master of Frankfurt" due to similar stylistic and compositional features. The equation of the master of Frankfurt with the contemporary painter Hendrik van Wueluwe, proposed by Delen in 1949, who had followed Goddard in 1984, was refuted by Falkenburg in 1987 and by Grosshans in 1988.

Life

There is hardly any reliable information about the artist's life. He was probably active in Antwerp until 1518. The stylistic affinity of his works with those of Hugo van der Goes suggests that van der Goes was his teacher. Presumably he was the head of one of the largest artist workshops in Antwerp, which "simplified the production of pictures through to 'mass production'" with "stenciled individual motifs such as groups of motifs and standardized brocade patterns [...].

Works

The shooting festival (1493)

The works of the Master of Frankfurt are assigned to him not by his name, but by the style of painting, for example the shooting festival , an allegory from 1493.

His self-portrait of the artist with his wife (now in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp) is dated 1496 and reveals that he was 36 years old at the time of completion, which calculates the year of his birth.

In 1505 the Anne Altar was donated to the Dominican monastery in Frankfurt .

The Frankfurt Städel owns the triptych with the crucifixion of Christ, St. Nikolaus and Margarete as well as the Humbracht family , which has been in Frankfurt since the beginning of the 16th century.

Numerous copies of his predecessors Rogier van der Weyden and Hugo van der Goes were made in the workshop of the Master of Frankfurt .
