Otto Donner from Richter
Otto Philipp Donner von Richter (born May 10, 1828 in Frankfurt am Main ; † November 13, 1911 there ) was a German history and portrait painter and art writer.
Life
Donner studied from 1843 to 1847 with, among others, Philipp Veit , Johann David Passavant and Jakob Becker at the Städelsche Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt am Main. In 1846 he traveled to Dresden, in 1847 via the Netherlands and Belgium to Paris. There he was a student in Paul Delaroche's studio . From 1848 to 1851 Donner stayed in Munich as a student of Moritz von Schwind . Between 1852 and 1854 he traveled to Italy with longer stays in Rome, Naples and Sicily. In 1854/55 he worked for Moritz von Schwind in the execution of the frescoes in the Landgrave's room in the Wartburg near Eisenach. In 1862/63, again in Paris, he was a student of Thomas Couture .
In 1870 he married Helene von Richter (1846–1916), whose maiden name he also used from 1876. From 1870 onwards painting took a back seat in favor of archaeological and art-historical studies. He published numerous publications on the art and church history of the city of Frankfurt. Together with Philipp Otto Cornill and Johann David Passavant, he founded the Association for the Historical Museum in 1877 , and became its chairman. He was a member of the board of the Association for History and Archeology , a member of the Free German Hochstift and took part in the excavations of the Heddernheim Roman settlement .
In his numerous art historical writings, he mainly dealt with old Frankfurt painters, including the Fyoll family, Jerg Ratgeb and Philipp Uffenbach, as well as with the pictures commissioned by the French royal lieutenant François de Théas Count von Thoranc during his time in Frankfurt.
