As a master of running one is medieval painter referred ranging from about 1435 to 1465 in Salzburg worked space. The painter, who is not known by name, got his emergency name after his picture of a crucifixion from the rectory (Dechanthof) of Laufen an der Salzach . The panel painting , 129 cm high and almost two meters wide, shows Mary and John under the cross against a golden background . It depicts the figures in their real mourning in bold colors and has thus moved from the previously usual schema-like representation of idealized figures of saints towards a realistic style. The work of the master von Laufen is thus an example of the transition from the Soft Style in painting in the region to a work influenced by the Dutch painters of his time.

A few other works are assigned to the Master von Laufen , including a second crucifixion in a smaller format in St. Florian Monastery .

The master of Laufen is stylistically very close to the master of the Hallein altar . A panel of the Helena legend is alternatively listed under the names of both masters. The master von Laufen and the painter of an altar in Altmühldorf , which also depicts a crucifixion, are also close.
