Master of Mühldorf

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The late Gothic painter, whose name is not known for certain, is referred to as Master of Mühldorf , who painted a passion altar with nine panels for the parish church of St. Laurentius in Altmühldorf in 1511 . The master may be identical to the painter Wilhelm Pätzsold, who died in Mühldorf in 1521 and was buried there in the parish church of St. Nikolaus.

In addition to the winged altar in Altmühldorf, a few other works to be found in the region are ascribed to the master of Mühldorf. His works are the Danube style attributable to an art historical grouping of the Danube region working painters of the first third of the 16th century. The Altmühldorfer Altar could have come from Michael Pacher's circle . There is also an influence of the early works of Lucas Cranach . Stylistically, it can also be compared with the large crucifixion panel from around 1450 at the Dechanthof in Laufen adSalzach, which was painted by Master von Laufen , who is also unknown by name .
