St. Laurentius in Altmühldorf

The Catholic parish church of St. Laurentius is a late Gothic brick hall church in the Altmühldorf district of Mühldorf am Inn in the district of the same name in Upper Bavaria . It belongs to the parish of Mühldorf in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising .

History and architecture

The church is located on the high bank to the west of Mühldorf in the train of the old street village dominating the Inn valley. The nave is a high three-aisled hall church built between 1509 and 1518. The central nave has a net vault, the other parts of the room are closed with cross vaults over round pillars in what used to be five, now four bays. The exterior is characterized by the exposed brickwork. To the south of the nave there is a sign with a star vault and a portal dating from the time of construction, as well as the so-called death chapel from the 17th century. The west tower with pointed helmet is dated on the first floor to 1518. After the collapse of its late Gothic predecessor, the choir was rebuilt in 1758 in simple baroque shapes over a rectangular floor plan with Bohemian vaults and the sacristy on the south side. In 1763 a two-storey west gallery was built.

As a result of moisture damage from unsuitable heating, plastering and roof truss renovation became necessary in 2016. The gallery could not be used for a long time due to static problems. The church therefore had to be closed for renovation from November 2016 to May 2019. The altar consecration took place on May 5, 2019.

Furnishing

Two pairs of glass paintings from around 1510 show the saints Florian and Sebastian as well as Georg and Christophorus . In the choir, ceiling and wall paintings from 1759 are preserved, which depict the martyrdom of St. Lawrence and full-length saints and are attributed to Johann Paul Kurz. An extraordinary crucifixion panel behind the celebration altar, pointing the way for old Bavarian painting, is regarded as an Italian and Bohemian influenced work from Salzburg around 1410. It is executed in oil and tempera paints on wood and shows the crucified Christ flanked by a group of complaining women, Johannes and Longinus on one side and high priests and soldiers on the other.

A late Gothic winged altar in the right aisle with nine painted panels is an important work by the master of Mühldorf (probably Wilhelm Pätzsold) from 1511 and shows figures of Saints Peter and Paul from around 1520 in the shrine . It comes from Westerndorf near Rosenheim . Figures of Saint Catherine from the late 15th century and Saints Antonius Eremita and Eligius from around 1520 were integrated into the neo-Gothic north side altar from 1857 . Saints Otto , Jerome and John the Evangelist from around 1500 are attached to the organ gallery. A rosary Madonna dates from the middle of the 17th century. The original death altar from around 1700 has been put up in the funerary chapel.

The organ is a new construction by Frenger & Eder from 2005 with 20 stops on two manuals and a pedal using an old inventory from 1938 by Georg Glatzl.

As part of the overall renovation, the sanctuary was also redesigned. The Munich artist duo "reception hall" worked together with the architect Oliver Tessin on the conception . The new altar made of Lasa marble with its semicircular design is reminiscent of the kuppa , the upper bowl of a chalice. The ambo and tabernacle stele are made of the same stone. An eight-meter-high golden altarpiece (retable) is of central importance for the new artistic conception . It is designed as a filigree, three-dimensional latticework that catches the baroque crucifix suspended from above .
