Meitan ( 湄潭 县 , Méitán Xiàn ) is a Chinese district in the prefecture of Zunyi in Guizhou Province . It has an area of ​​1,864 km² and has a population of 500,000. Its main town is the Meijiang (湄江 镇) community.

Geography and climate

The Meitan County has an area of ​​1,864 km² with a north-south extension of 96.5 kilometers and a west-east extension of 25.5 kilometers. It borders on Fenggang and Yuqing to the east, Weng'an to the south, Zunyi County and Suiyang to the west, and Zheng'an and Fenggang to the north . The relief is mountainous in the north and southwest, in the center, south and east it is flat. The highest point is located in the large community of Xihe at an altitude of 1,556 meters, it is called Qusunkan (取 笋 坎). The lowest point is in the south near Shilian at 460 meters. The average height of the circle is about 900 meters. Almost two thirds of the territory of Meitan is covered with forest, and the Chinese air quality standards are always observed.

Meitan has a subtropical climate with four clearly distinguishable seasons. The summer is warm and characterized by rain-laden southerly winds. Above 1000 meters the average annual temperature is 14 ° C, there are accordingly between 260 and 270 frost-free days per year. Annual rainfall is 1,111 mm, two thirds of which fall in the months of May to September.

Agriculture, especially the cultivation of tea and tobacco, is the most important industry in the district. According to official information, organic tea is planted on 40,000 hectares alone; Meitan is the most important tea region in Guizhou Province. The best-known varieties include the delicate green Meitan shoot (湄潭 翠 芽) and Zunyi red (遵义 红). The two well-known Chinese cigarette brands Panda (熊猫) and Zhonghua (中华) also come from Meitan.

The average income of the citizens of Meitan is well below the Chinese average. Despite strong growth in recent years, the urban population had an income of 29,536 yuan per capita in 2017 (8.1% more than in 2016), the rural population of only 12,137 yuan (9.8% more than 2016).

The provincial capital Guiyang is about 200 kilometers away from Meitan, the metropolis Chongqing about 300 kilometers away.

Culture

The site of the former Zhejiang University in Meitan (Meitan Zhejiang daxue jiuzhi 湄潭 浙江 大学 旧址) has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (6-1051) since 2006 .
