One of the most explosive diplomatic disputes in the context of the work of the MSG is the dealings with West Papua , which has been part of Indonesia since 1963 and whose history has since been shaped by efforts for independence. The members of the MSG emphasized their interest in a peaceful solution to the conflict and granted West Papua observer status at a summit in June 2015 in Honiara, Solomonic . This caused anger on the part of Indonesia, which has the status of an associate member and sees itself as the only legitimate representative of West Papua.
