Melchior Klug (* in Lindloh ; † after 1722, proven in Rüthen ) was a stone cutter .

Life

Klug is one of the "greats among the Rüthener Steinhauer", who is identified through various works in the Duchy of Westphalia (see works). He became a citizen of the city of Rüthen around 1720 ; He paid his citizens' money in three annual installments (1720 to 1722). In the town's treasury register it says: “Melchior Klug, born in Lindtloh, Herzogthumb Berghe , freyen standtz, is accepted as a citizen.” During the same period, the stone carvers Heinrich Klug (died October 4, 1735) and Petrus Klug, also join who are probably brothers of the master, mentioned as new citizens of Rüthens. Melchior Klug lived in a "Haus am Wulfshof" located at St. John's Church, and was punished for "extraordinary street tumult" by the city, which frequently hired him as a stone cutter.

Works

Klug gained particular fame through his extensive work on the construction of the Grafschaft monastery . As part of this work by the architect Michael Spanner , Klug was hired to carry out all the decorative parts on the buildings. He took over the production of all portals and figures, cornices , corners, window and door frames and chimneys from Rüthener green sandstone , which he made to the full satisfaction of the client: "Everything is smooth and clean" is noted in the church records. Above the door of the richly decorated west portal, two lions hold the Grafschafter monastery coat of arms with their front paws. In the ornament above the shield, the miter and the abbot's staff as well as a martyr's palm can be seen as a symbol of the monastery patron, Alexander , venerated as a saint . In the building invoice it was noted: "... a large portal after the demolition given with the monastery coat of arms and two lions, wanted outside, should be kept by his own food and drink for 70 Reichsthaler."

Above the portal is the figure of Annos , the founder of the monastery, who is venerated as a saint, which was also made by Klug: As a bishop he wears the miter, in his left the shepherd's crook, in his right the model of a church.

Klug decorated the entrance to the abbot's apartment with two allegorical figures depicting autumn and winter; the entrance on the south wing shows the figures "Spring" and "Summer" as a counterpart. Above this entrance stands the stone figure of the founder of the order, Benedict of Nursia , in a shell niche , with his finger on his mouth commanding silence. There are angel figures on both sides.

Other works by Klug include the “poor soul sacrificial stock” in the Rüthener cemetery and a wayside shrine in Eickelborn . Unfortunately, the latter has not been preserved. It can be assumed that further examples of the numerous holy houses in Westphalia go back to Melchior Klug.
