Melchor Rodríguez García (born May 30, 1893 in Seville , † February 14, 1972 in Madrid ) was a Spanish anarchist politician . He was known as El ángel rojo (in German: The red angel ). During the Spanish Civil War , Rodríguez García was in charge of the prisons in Madrid from November 10, 1936 and saved many political prisoners, supporters of the Franquists, from being lynched . Through the intercession of former prisoners such as General Agustín Muñoz Grandes , who were released after Francisco Franco came to power , he was sentenced not to death but to 20 years in prison, of which he served five years. He had been installed as a city councilor by the Iberian Anarchist Federation and became mayor of Madrid on February 28, 1939, but only to arrange the handover of the city to the victorious fascists .
